Getting to Trieste by chance is easier than with premeditated intent, as the Habsburg, James Joyce and WWII refugees can testify. There is, however, a harbor, a limited number of land routes, and an airport with a few flights in Ronchi, 35km NW of Trieste. Its airline code is TRS, and trains to downtown Trieste are not frequent, but cheap and fast. A bit further afield, airports in Venice (VCE), Ljubljana (LjU) and Treviso (TFS) may provide alternative landing points. From VCE to Venezia-Mestre there are buses, and from there to Trieste it takes 1h50' by rail. Reaching SISSA from downtown Trieste is a 1h steep uphill walk, but bus 38 from Piazza Oberdan does it in 15'. Running every 20', tickets can be bought in Tabacchi stores.
