Axisymmetric Microswimmers

Swimming at low Reynolds Number requires fighting against the so called Scallop Theorem: at low Reynolds Number, reversibility makes swimming impossible when using a single degree of freedom, and we have to add at least one degree of freedom if we want to advance.In this page we present a study on the Optimal Stroke of the model swimmer by Najafi and Golestanian: the "three linked spheres", and some more general axisymmetric swimmers. The equation of motion are solved numerically using the Boundary Element Method for exterior Stokes Flows.
